Glenn Evans of Texas’s Longview News-Journal profiled Richard Lively of the Lone Star Mower Racing Association:

The races themselves are his passion. A former go-cart competitor, Lively drifted into the lawnmower lane about 10 years ago.

Also a pit crew member at monster truck rallies, he saw two passions crash into one sport.

“We race throughout the year and do the car show, the AutoRama,” he said. “It’s the biggest show in Dallas.”

Lively, 49, is a member of the Lone Star Mower Racing Association, a roughly 30-member posse where his nickname is “Ricky Bobby,” after Will Ferrell’s win-obsessed character in the 2006 comedy “Talladega Nights.”

“We call it the poor man’s NASCAR,” Lively said of the sport he steered toward a state championship in 2009, his sixth.

And in true “Everything is bigger in Texas” form, Richard has some monster mowers to show off as well… check out the photos from news-journal.com!

The Lone Star Mower Racing Association (LSMRA) Texas group spent this weekend with the Pink’s All Out Crew and 450 of the fastest cars in Texas at the filming of Pink’s All Out Episode 23.

This show will air in July or August 2009. Watch for the LSMRA members both in the display area with everything from IMOW to FX including the only 5
engine 10 cylinder John Deere 210 14 foot long lawnmower “The Mow Longer”.

Not only did we display to the 15,000 racing fans but we ran six mowers head to head on the track.

Results were:

AP Class John Nelson VS Mike Cupps. John beat Mike who claimed the green light on his side never came on. I think he was right but don’t tell him.

SP/CP Match with Eddy Akin and Scott Bittle. Eddy edged Scott out at the 330 mark. Both had great starts but Scotts reaction time was a bit slow. I
think the crown noise got to him.

BP Class with David Hill and Caroll Campbell looked good at the start but that 700 on Carroll’s machine just was not ready for the drag strip. Got a
little hole in it. No problem just a bottom case exchange and it will be ready to run.

Those that took time to come out and display their mowers were:

  • Scott and Mitchell Bittle from Hope, Arkansas
  • Eddy and Patti Akin from Prescott, Arkansas
  • John Nelson from Richardson, Texas
  • Mike and Vicki Cupps from Corsicana, Texas
  • John and Rebecca Merritt from Texarkana, Texas
  • David and Julie Hill from Keller, Texas
  • Caroll Campbell from McKinney, Texas

Watch for Photos on the USLMRA/LSMRA site shortly.
