Racers from the Minnesota Lawn Mower Racing Association took to the ice on Saturday, January 29, 2011 as part of the St. Paul Winter Carnival on Lake Phalen in St. Paul. Head on over to KSTP-TV (NBC) in St. Paul for some great video!
Twin Cities Live sent reporter Emily Engberg out to talk with the gentlemen from the Minnesota Lawn Mower Racing Association, and they’ve posted this at TwinCitiesLive.com:
The Minnesota Lawn Mower Racing Association is putting some fun into a chore that most people hate. What is normally used to mow your lawn has been changed to a fast racing machine. Riding lawn mowers are being used to race all over the area and some of the racers compete as far away as Florida and Georgia.
Races will be held at 1 & 5 this Saturday at the Anoka County Fairgrounds just north-west of Minneapolis / St. Paul. For more information, head to our 2010 Schedule.
TheSocialElement.com is a web-based community project by Summit Brewing Company focused on all kinds of outside-the-box activities seen on the streets of Saint Paul, Minneapolis and beyond. The site has previously feature ddouble-tall bike makers and riders, nordic battle reenactment “warriors”, lawn bowlers, and the Lake Superior surfers and looks to include groups that share the common bond of passion for activities one wouldn’t ordinarily see or do.
The Social Element had this to say about the Minnesota Lawn Mower Racing Association:
In January of 2005 the United States Lawn Mower Racing Association awarded lawn mower racers in the state of Minnesota a Local Chapter Charter. Since that point it has been blades off and away we mow!!
The Men, and Women of the MNLMRA all get their mow-jo on with 6 classes of racing lawn mowers (the fastest of which can reach speeds upwards of 60mph!) that travel to county fairs and festivals during the summer months and various events on ice in the winter.
They also put together this great video featuring many of our MLMRA:
The STA-BIL National Lawn Mower Racing Series returns to the Gopher State, for another Double Header Race Day, Saturday, July 31, 2010 at the Anoka County Fair.
The Anoka County Fair is staffed by racing and tractor pull people, so they know how to build a good course for us. We expect a big field of racers, as Anoka is the 2nd to last STA-BIL Series Weekend of the 2010 season before STA-BIL Nationals Weekend (Englewood, TN is August 14-15).
Turf Titans of the U.S. Lawn Mower Racing Association (USLMRA) will mow ‘em down in Minnesota at the Houston County Mow Down, a USLMRA STA-BIL Racing Series Event at the Houston County Fairgrounds, 203 History Lane, Caledonia, Minnesota, 1:00pm and 7:00pm on Saturday, June 19th. Admission is $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for children 12 and under.
“What better way to enjoy the day before Father’s Day than with some sod slinging, grass kicking lawn mower racing,” said USLMRA Race Coordinator and Houston County Fair Board Member Jeremy Johnson of Hoka, Minnesota. “We’re going to be on the ‘cutting edge’ of motorsports!”
Racers from the Minnesota and Wisconsin Lawn Mower Racing Associations will converge on Houston County, along with competitors from North and South Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois and Michigan.
“This will be a Double Header USLMRA Points Race Day,” added Johnson. “We’ll host two races, with the first race in the afternoon and the second race in the evening. This will allow racers to compete in two national points races on the same day, and will qualify them for the STA-BIL Keeps Gas Fresh Finals and U.S. Open races during Labor Day Weekend. We’ll also find a class for local racers to come out and have fun. The mow the merrier!”
