What a week! We are winding up for this weekend’s STA-BIL Series Race in Maryland, so I’m going to be brief, but I want to take a second to mention some amazing press the USLMRA, our Local Chapters & Affiliated Clubs, and of course our Title Sponsor STA-BIL Fuel Stabilizer have gotten over the last several days!
Amongst the many incredible experiences we had at Charlotte Motor Speedway earlier this summer, talking to Wall Street Journal Staff Reporter Valerie Bauerlein was one of my personal highlights. Her profile of our growing sport, featuring quotes from myself, our own STA-BIL Engine Answerman Bobby Cleveland, Jon “Rooster” Lewman, Tina Paccione and more went up on The Wall Street Journal’s website last night! Bobby even got one of the WSJ’s famed “Hedcut” style stipple drawings, seen to the left.
Here’s a taste of what Ms. Bauerlein wrote:
For years, lawn-mower racing was best known as a punch line on the TV sitcom “Home Improvement.”
Not anymore. Today the sport has become a mini-Nascar, or as it likes to be called, Grasscar. Drivers travel the Midwest and Southeast to sling sod in the league’s 13-race series.
“This is the biggest thing we’ve ever done,” said USLMRA director, “Mr. Mow-it-all” Bruce Kaufman, as fans milled around the new Charlotte track on a recent Saturday morning.

It’s such a treat to see our talented and passionate competitors acknowledged by the nation’s largest newspaper by circulation – way to MOW, all!
It was also a treat to talk to Andrew Roush, Advocacy Editor for the alumni magazine of The University of Texas, The Alcalde.
Andrew and I recorded a podcast after her saw Jennifer Boomer’s photo essay from a Lone Star Lawn Mower Racing event, and I took him through the history and culture of what he calls our “unusual sport”. You can stream the podcast here:
The Alcalde also ran a video segment on the Longhorn Network, featuring Lone Star Mower Racing secretary Sammie Neel and a ton of great racing action! Check out Jennifer Boomer’s photo essay and give the video a watch!
