Twin Cities Live sent reporter Emily Engberg out to talk with the gentlemen from the Minnesota Lawn Mower Racing Association, and they’ve posted this at TwinCitiesLive.com:

The Minnesota Lawn Mower Racing Association is putting some fun into a chore that most people hate. What is normally used to mow your lawn has been changed to a fast racing machine. Riding lawn mowers are being used to race all over the area and some of the racers compete as far away as Florida and Georgia.

Races will be held at 1 & 5 this Saturday at the Anoka County Fairgrounds just north-west of Minneapolis / St. Paul. For more information, head to our 2010 Schedule.

Steve Kaminski of The Grand Rapids Press wrote this about the STA-BIL Great Lakes Summer Nationals Race for Huntington’s Disease, held in Sparta, Michigan on the third weekend of July:

Allan Brown of Comstock Park has watched at least one race in all 50 states and has visited about 2,000 tracks in all during the past 35 years.

But Brown said he never had seen anything like he saw Sunday afternoon.

The eighth annual STA-BIL Great Lakes Summer Nationals Race for Huntington’s Disease Research returned to Paul C. Miller Airport, and Brown and his wife Nancy took in the second and final day of the races.

Brown co-founded the National Speedway Directory in 1975, and that kept him traveling to tracks all across the country. He sold the publication this past December, and that has enabled him to catch more races closer to home.

Brown came to one conclusion Sunday — they really will race anything.

“This is completely different,” Brown said. “I have known about this for a number of years, and I always wanted to come up and see it, but never had a chance.

“It’s pretty cool. It’s surprising how those fast ones go through the corners and survive without tipping over.”

Grand Rapids Press photographer Joel Hawksley took these great photos:
