For all those who daydream about racing while driving their riding lawn mower in their backyard, your dream is about to come true.

Lawn mower races sanctioned by the Wisconsin Lawn Mower Racing Association will be coming to the Northern Wisconsin State Fair in Chippewa Falls in 2010.

“We were looking for more of a motor sports activity on Sunday, so that’s what we brought in,” fair manager Rusty Volk said this week.

Besides the United States, lawn mower races are held in Great Britain and Australia.

The local races will be held Sunday, July 11, as part of the grandstand entertainment for the fair, which runs July 7-11.

A flat track will be created, and the lawn mower association will be bringing in equipment to make sure the races are safe, Volk said.

Berms will be installed as another safety measure.

An open class will be held for local residents who want to try out their riding lawn mowers in a race.
