On a dust-choked Saturday afternoon, souped-up riding lawn mowers spun a fine mist of field dirt in the air as their drivers steered around turns and down the stretch on a make-shift track at Cypress Field.

Laurel’s first-ever lawn mower races and chili cook-off took the field Sept. 19 when competitors from the Delmarva chapter of the  U.S. Lawn Mower Racing Association brought their mowers to the fields adjacent to the DiPietro Community Center on Cypress Street.
