‘Lawn Mower Racing’ has been nominated to compete in this month’s AwesomeOff. Check it out here.
An AwesomeOff is a head-to-head challenge match, with the core competitive element being the scale of awesomeness. During the month of July, 30 entries will compete in a round-robin format. At the end of the month the top eight entries will compete in a single elimination tournament to determine the July AwesomeOff Champion.
We would love Lawn Mower Racing to make July’s top eight, so sign up, vote early, and vote often! Make sure to check back daily for updates. Mow on!
Sandwiched between Pantomime Horse Racing and Outhouse Racing, SI.com (a CNN Network site) features the USLMRA in its list of 22 “Most Ridiculous Competitions”. John Rolfe of SI.com had this to say:
On the cutting edge of alternative sports for motor enthusiasts, the U.S. Lawn Mower Racing Association offers competitions across the country in five classes: stock, international mowers of weeds, prepared (modified), FX (major modified) and JP (juniors/kids). No, the blades aren’t spinning during a race — they’ve been removed.
Other featured sports include Pig Racing, Pig Diving, Toilet Seat Toss, Extreme Ironing, Wife Carrying, Ostrich Racing, Cheese Rolling, Elephant Polo, Tough Guy Racing, Beer Pong, Bog Snorkeling, Mud Volleyball, Chess Boxing, Competitive Eating, Cup Stacking, Punkin Chunkin, Pumpkin Sailing, Sculpture Racing and the annual World Series of Birding. To read more about all of these amazing competitions, head on over to SI.com!
Debra J. Groom, writing for FOX Sports and The Post-Standard, covers the USLMRA and the races at West Amboy speedway and great racing in Hastings, NY.
It’s a national pastime, in which the participants go by some pretty unique handles.
C’mon. Where else can you find top racers named Patty “Precious Mowments” and her husband, Tim “The Mowron” Robinson from Texas? Or how about Charles “Mr. Mowjangles” Powell, a U.S. Lawn Mower Racing Association board member?
The head of the association, Bruce Kaufman, is known as Mr. Mow-it-All and the Sodfather. He clearly enjoys lawn mower racing.
“We can’t run away and join the circus anymore. And we can’t follow the Grateful Dead around the country,” Mr. Mow-it-All said. “So we might as well race lawn mowers.”
